Watch The Northern Lights From Space

When it comes to photography some of my favorite pictures to look at are those of scenery shots. I especially have and appreciation of scenery shots that were taken from some hard to reach locations. Pictures of scenery from angles that are just not thought of or done are really a treat. I just saw this video on YouTube on a series of pictures that were taken by NASA Astronaut Don Petit from the International Space Station, absolutely amazing!

The pictures are from the Space Station looking at earth and the amount of detail in these pictures are truly breath taking. The camera was able to not only pick up the thin layer of atmosphere that surrounds the planet but also the amazing light show of Aurora Borealis.

For those of you that are not aware of what this naturally occurring light show phenomenon is here is a short description. Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights as they are more commonly referred to occur in the upper part of the northern hemisphere. Technically it’s a collision of ion particles that are charged up from the earth’s magnetism. That’s just a basic description of what’s going on there the point of course is that it’s a naturally occurring light show that happens all the time and if you do a search on it you will find tons of pictures of the northern lights.

All those pictures that you will find of the northern lights will look amazing of course. Nothing can compare to the pictures of the light show taken from the perspective of looking down on them from outer space. Perhaps the best part of the video is that the photos were put together in sequence and then animated to produce a flowing sequence of pictures that will blow you away. For anyone that has a true appreciation of photography and the amount of effort and work that had to be put into this video please pass on the beauty of these pics.
