Looks like Panasonic is determined to find a way to make their Micro Four Thirds camera technology to become more accepted and main stream. Panasonic today finally announced pricing details for the first Micro Four Thirds system camera to hit the market this November at a retail price just under $800. The Lumix DMC-G1 will be fitted with the 14-45mm f3.5-5.6 lens which is comparable to a 28-90mm lens.
Some of the other features of the new Lumix G1, it’s coming out at a light 1.3 lbs and is a 12.1 mega-pixel camera. It will feature a three-inch swiveling LCD screen and a live electronic viewfinder. One of the big selling points for Panasonic and this camera is it’s SLR like features which basically means interchangeable lenses. So naturally with the release of this their first Micro Four Thirds camera they would have to announce the release of at least one lens to go along with the camera and that is Lumix G Vario 45-200mm f4.0-5.6 which will be priced just under $350. The only other feature worth mentioning are the colors Panasonic has taken a cue from the iPod color scheme and chosen to release three color options for your new camera either red, blue or black.
This new Micro Four Thirds system is a new technology developed by Panasonic and Olympus which gives other companies a standard by which they can make different interchangable lenses and cameras. It’s an intesting concept but I think the verdict is still out on they type of quality this new system will give photographers. So start looking for reviews once the new Lumix starts hitting the market. Olympus has not announced their first camera or pricing for this new system although it is expected soon. Panasonic has also stated that they will be releasing more Micro Four Third system cameras in 2009 plus a note worthy mention of one that will be able to take HD video as well. Now that will be the camera that really gets my attention. So what are your thoughts on this new Micro Four Thirds system? Do you think it will take off or does it have a slim to no chance of gaining some market traction?
