Digital Cameras Are Almost 18 Years Old

Compact digital cameras have come a long way in the past 12 years. Why am i looking back twelve years you may ask well because it is twelve years ago this year that Canon one of the camera company godfathers of camera industry started their manufacturing of compact digital cameras back in 1996.

That really is not all that long ago but oh my how far the comapct digital camera has come in such a short period of time. In that short period of time Canon has managed to reach a selling milestone by shipping their 100 millionth comapct digital camera. That is quite a milestone to achieve in only 12 years.

The digital camera industry really got it’s start in the consumer market thanks to Kodak. As they were the company to push for a global benchmark for how color should be defined digitally. They created the first digital camera system for professional photo journalist back in 1991. That revelation was soon followed up by the release of consumer digital cameras by Apple, Kodak, Sony and Casio in the years of 1994 thru 1996. Those were really the birth years of the consumer based digital camera industry.

It was really Kodak though that was the backbone and for lack of a better term the birth mother of the digital camera age. They not only created the standard for the industry but they also partnered up with companies like IBM, Microsoft and Kinkos to create software and hardware like the kiosks that you see in every department store and drugstore around the world. Those kiosks and that software is really what drove photography industry to an all new level of user friendliness.

There are more cameras and more amatuer photographers in the world now than at any other time in history. The reason for this is the digital camera if not for this technological advancement the artistry that is photography may have never become so mainstream. Sites like flickr, snapfish or photobucket would have never come to be. It is truly amazing how in such a short period of time that a simple invention like a digital camera has influenced the way we see and record the world today.

Ads like these help to spread the digital camera age.
